WildTAK Update

This week, the DroneWild team are in the West Region working alongside @forestryandlandscot rangers to roll out TAK. DroneWild has been collaborating with Mark Halliday (Mini Work Groups) to develop our own dedicated server and operating system, allowing us to tailor and adapt this powerful software to meet our specific requirements.

We’re looking forward to seeing how WildTAK can support and enhance ranger teams in their wildlife management activities, and to monitoring its impact in the work on the National Forest Estate.

WildTAK Update

This week, the DroneWild team are in the West Region working alongside @forestryandlandscot rangers to roll out TAK. Training of the third phase of our machine learning model is now underway. This phase will introduce additional species and further refine detection of species already included in the current model.

Development work on live streaming in the field also continues, in collaboration with Vizgard.

Later in 2026, we will launch the DroneWild AI automatic web app. This platform will generate survey maps by analysing every image captured, with outputs including detailed spatial maps showing wildlife numbers and locations, alongside a complete folder of annotated images that form a robust evidence base.

We are extremely excited about what these developments will deliver for the wildlife management and conservation sector.

During phase 3, we aim to increase the number of species the ML code recognises as well as improve the instance count of existing species such as Grey squirrel, Red squirrel and fox. Last week we hosted a three-day Development Event in Galloway Forest Park with rangers, partners, and tech specialists.

The programme included presentations, workshops, and field trials of our latest hardware and software.

Highlights included:

Following weeks of preparation - the second development and research event for DroneWild's wildlife ranger team takes place next week.

As part of our ongoing machine learning development at DroneWild, we’ve now added Père David’s Deer as a species of interest thanks to a strong available dataset.

One of our FLS wildlife rangers, working on the DroneWild project, captured unique footage of a first-generation Sika/Red hybrid stag beside a Red stag - offering a perfect comparison of their differences.

We ran part of the footage through our machine learning model, and interestingly, it identified the hybrid as closer to Sika—likely influenced by its coloration and rump shape.

Combining field skills with technology continues to reveal fascinating insights into our wildlife!

We are so grateful to everyone that came along to DroneWild’s project launch yesterday and to everyone that has helped get us here. @civtechscotland started us on this journey over a year ago and we couldn’t have asked for better sponsors than @forestryandlandscot who have supported and encouraged us at every step.

Drone trials are commencing just now for the first stage of the two-year project. We know that the current drones that are being trialled will not be the ones we use at the end of the project but it is exciting to get the training program underway and build capacity within the Wildlife Management team at @forestryandlandscot.

One aspect of DroneWild that has already begun is the development of an advanced machine learning model that will recognise all UK mammal species using drone imagery in real time. It will also break down the sex of the deer species where possible.

We are fortunate to be working closely with Peter van Lunteren at Addax Data Science to develop this. Below is an example of the machine learning model in action identifying and sexing a group of fallow deer.

Today we are delighted to kick off a two year pre-commercial agreement with @forestryandlandscot following a successful @civtechscotland process which started in early 2023. Developing a micro drone with customised software and machine learning for wildlife detection has long been a vision of ours and we are looking forward to working on this project over the next two years.
